Mark to Andre:
So, how does one switch from SOM to Quality thinking? ?What does one practice?
Andre:
Getting into to the Quality mode of thinking is a bit tricky and there
are no hard and fast rules to this. Some suggestions:
Read ZMM, I like the section where Pirsig talks about 'gumption traps'
and LILA, where Pirsig specifically talks about how to experience
static PoV's.
Do some meditating...slow down your thinking...try to stop them.Marsha
suggested to me once to just do it for say 10 mins am and 10 mins pm.
Good advice! Very interesting what happens after you get a routine
going.
I drove myself crazy questioning myself why I did particular things
(as in the example I gave you) and in the end I gave up but as this
process continued for awhile you tune-in yourself about Quality.
When I read a paper or watch TV (not here in China, I don't have
these) I look for and listen to the values that are presented, in what
way and the basis upon which these values rest, the assumptions that
are made.
Participate in this forum, talk to family, friends and colleagues.
There are other ways but you'll have to find your own. Of course the
nicest one will come in your flyer since you asked:
'Say I were to go out to spread the word about Quality. ?What kind
of flyer would I provide as a brief description?'
I really like this one, it sums it up nicely and I place it in the
context of: 'if you want to do what is reasonable, keep following
those static patterns, if you want to do good then follow DQ'.
(Pirsig, AHP tapes).
Your flyer could read some thing like this:
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but to skid
in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly
used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"...

Mark:
Don't worry, this is not my plan.
Andre:
I have found dynamic people very infectious. There is something
irrisistable about them. The (lack of) patterns becomes addictive.
Stick to DQ/SQ!
For what it is woth.
Andre
