Krimel to Andre:
The distinction between self and other is built into the genetic patterns of
slime mold. The perception of the self as distinction from others
begins in all human beings everywhere and everywhen around the age of
six months. By 13 or 14 months all healthy human infants develop the
ability to see the world from different points of view. They can see
themselves as subjects and they can see themselves as objects. This is
not an artifact of the Greek age. It is an artifact of being a human
being on planet earth.

Andre:
The notion of 'self' is an intellectual construction. The notion of
'other' is another intellectual construction. The notion of 'self' in
relation to 'other' is another intellectual construction. To suggest
that this is a universal intellectual construction is presumptuous.

I liked the antelope versus my forearm for diner example but here is an
article on the evolution of the self/other distinction:

The immune system is another striking example cells making this
discrimination without intellectual input.
