But that begs the question, "What does dynamic experience arise from?"
[Arlo]
"Does a dog have a Buddha nature?" Some questions can only be answered with
"mu". In other words, its a fools game to try to "find" an answer. It is trying
to formulate a symbolic system devoid of self-representation and recursion. Any
system powerful enough to answer this question will necessarily be open to such
infinite recursion.
This wouldn't rankle me so much if you showed any indication that you've
learned anything the last dozen times this was bantered about here. Instead,
you act like this is some shocking thing you've only just now stumbled upon.
Like no one has ever responded to, or dealt with, this before.
[Platt]
Again we see that when it comes to origins, reason and logic (the ideology of
SOM critical thought) swallows its own tail. Something else is going on...
[Arlo]
Of course there is. All symbolic systems, any representation of experience, is
essentially incomplete. S/O thought does not see this blindspot. MOQ thought
acknowledges it and offers pointers to glimpse it. The best statement Pirsig
ever made is "All this is just an analogy". Of course it is. It HAS to be. All
symbolic systems swallow their own tail, even the MOQ. The MOQ is capable of
seeing this, though, while S/O thought keeps searching for the way to fill that
blindspot permanently; such as by asking questions like "where does dynamic
experience arise from?"
Kudos, however, for another moronic pairing of SOM and "critical thought".
Pirsig is one of the best critical thinkers around. The MOQ is a product of
critical thinking.
[Platt]
as Ant says, "a general progressive direction" or "a creative impulse" that is
foreign to "blinkered" academics "who can't see beyond the
creationist/materialist options."
[Arlo]
Thankfully, many academics are not so "blinkered". That many in the West, and
not just academics, but everyone (politicians and priests, busdrivers and
mechanics, CEOs and small business owners), are unable to see beyond this
option is evidence of the S/O mindset of our prevailing culture. To portray the
population of academics are any more prone to S/O thought is simply more of
your pandering to right-wing nonsense. Indeed, I would say that you have a
better chance of finding someone not beholden to S/O thought by visiting the
academy than stopping by your local mall or downtown pub.
