Hi Mark and Marsha,

Apologies,

I tried to channel too many impressions into a single reply. So it fell
flat. So let me try again.

1) Mark, your quote from the Dhammapada/Buddha had a typo "without thoughts"
It should read "with our thoughts". The last time, a letter "r" was
dropped/replaced with such
significance was when theancient Christian monks, in hand copied
"celebrate" in their texts : )
I am kiddlng you. Its an old joke.

2) Marsha, the quotation in full can be found here.
http://www.thebigview.com/buddhism/dhammapada-01.html. The quote correctly
applies for the individual, but as I tried to invert, also for the group as
a whole. What they collectively think and agree to think as the
norm, manifests as the world we find ourselves in. For instnace, if the rest
of the world wants to get caught up in a pissing contest, chances are if I
hang around, I will get caught up in the crossfires. What I make of all the
piss in the wind is another thing altogether; and I have been in one too
many to know that to get the best out of it is to stay out of it.
3) Mark, we may not know individually at a specific time how the rest of the
world thinks. But collectively we can get a fairly good idea. Over time, we
can see where everyone else is coming from. I had a chance to delve
again into organic chemistry in the work I am doing, and reminded again of
the strong carbon bonds that exist, without which we would not have had the
stability of so many macro-molecules that gives life its basis and
elasticities. In the social context humans form instinctly, valences with
certain norms and structures, which become convention and therefore
"real". If we have a periodic table of such human valences we would come up
with those that persist most and those which persist less.

Best regards
Khoo Hock Aun
