3 things happened all right: 
1.  The Palestinian Diaspora was the fault of their Arab neighbors who invaded 
Isreal thru Palestine.  In the long run it was probably a good thing because if all 

Palestinians lived in Palestine now, it would be like Gaza times 10. 
2. The Soviet influence via the Aswan Dam is no excuse.  Eastern Europe was 
occupied by the Soviets for 40 years but have been able to recover. 

3. The Shah promoted Westernization, so that is not necessarily the answer. 
I think John's point is not that Muslims are not western enough, but that they can't get 
along with their neighbors.
