Europe was once in the grip of Christendom represented by the 
Church which - united with kings and nobility - kept people down. Was 
it after all the Church arrangement that made Europe able to free itself 
from religious tyranny, and - consequently - the Muslim world's lack of 
something similar to a Church what keeps them under the spell?

I see your point here. A lack of centralized church allows anyone to
claim to be an imam ( locally) and declare his own fatwa. I can see how
that could happen. Also ( and I am not making excuses) it's the new
immigrants' fear of the unknown, now that they are in a new land. They
are afraid that their daughters will become immoral if they don't dress
right. All that is Bull shit of course, and if you are going to screw
around you will do it regardless of what the dress code is. Hell, it sure
makes it a lot easier to get about and do whatever the hell you want if
you are hiding under a veil. Incognita.

Pirsig said something to the effect " do we believe in god because we do
the ceremonies, or do we do the ceremonies because we believe in God"
For these people, they believe because they do the ceremonies. 

Last week in my yoga class, the instructor was talking about a certain
pose, how to do it right and all the nuances that are involved with it,
and then she wanted to say 'eventually, as you MASTER  it' , but caught
herself and changed the word Master to 'get it right'. A little religion
in the hands of the ignorant is a very dangerous thing. Yes the Muslim
world is waiting for its reformation. Turkey was making some headways
with that. Of course if it does happen, it would have a hard time making
headways in the Arab world.

For these people, a little religion is a dangerous thing. to quote a
flight instructor when I answered him that I just got my 100th flying
hour, " oh, just enough hours to get yourself killed'
