Marsha to Andre:
In the James quote is truth capitalized because it comes at the beginning of a sentence or because it represents an absolute truth?
Andre:
Truth is not absolute Marsha, as you well know...and certainly not within radical empiricism. I am glad you notice the different ways in which Mr. Pirsig denotes one thing and/or another through capitalizing (or not).Still the 'idea' of Truth is an admirable one. I suppose the difference lies in what you fill the 'Truth' container with.As you say it is easily filled with many truths...but you also question the whole notion of 'Truth'. I agree with you that even the 'container' does not exist.
The strength of the MOQ is that it does not consider itself as 'absolute truth'. It considers itself a high quality intellectual pattern of value...which is provisional. Bodvar, who lives in the shoe, considers the 'shoe-experience' Quality/Reality/Absolute Truth/Metaphysics!
Oh well, sad really.
