I don't know about primitive languages either, but I do know that
the forms of intellect Pirsig mentions require definition, i.e., a subject
ascribing meaning to an objective symbol, and thus within SOM. The
subject-object construction may not be transparent, but it is certainly 
inferred. 

By contrast,"Quality cannot be defined." (Lila, 5)
