It sounds like you are making a case for a liberal arts education which I
whole heartedly support.

One of the tragedies of the "conservative revolution" was turning colleges
into trade schools.

Science is one form of discussion there are many more.
Literature is full of knowledge required to make sense of the human world
for example. You also need history to understand science itself.
