Scott, I'll neeed to consider that in more detail -

Clearly I cannot yet suspend disbelief in the FM-W view, but the point
of this approach is evolutionary - making small leaps from where one
already is.

I still says when you say "science" you mean good old fashioned
objective logical positivism type science. I still says this is just
linguistic.

The other thing I should point out - I may be a recent fan of
Dennett's philosophical common sense, but that's not where my views
are founded. 50 years immediate experience of "quality" is where it
started, then moved on via the weird "subjectivity" of new-physics -
Schroedinger and Heisenberg, Talbot and Capra, and the like, only
triggered by Pirsig's MoQ. GOF-science has not caught up with that
yet. Their is no doubt Peircian "firstness" is very close to this same
interaction too - I've said as much several times before. Philosophy
and metaphysics could not have been further from my agenda.

(I suspect I'm going to find a lot in FM-W that fits, just in different words.)

In your language above ... I've said before although the
"interactions" occur all the way down, I don't see semiosis arising
until we get to "higher" consciousness of some kind. At present that
would be more than a suspension of disbelief, it would be an enormous
leap of faith, but I'm not standing still :-)
