If "individuals" are supreme over society, why do you care none for the
"individuals" being killed in the name of preserving "American society",
let's talk those who are nothing but "collateral" and not threats themselves?
And as always, your SOMist-minded "only two choices are "individuals
removed from culture" and "society devoid of individuals"" is nonsensical.
Pirsig's emergentist paradigm gives us a third way out, where collective
activity of individuals on one level gives rise to the emegent, higher
level structure above it.
Inorganic "individuals" collective activity gives rise to the biological
level, where biological "individuals" collective activity gives rise to the
social level, where social level "individuals" collective activity gives
rise to the intellectual level. The collective activity of individuals on
the intellectual activity (the law of gravity, calculus, thermodynamics,
habeas corpus, etc.) may someday give rise to yet another emergent level.
