Hello Kevin,
I made a mistake in the last posting as follows:
SA said: "What is ego? That is a difficult
question. I don't know if we could merely point at
it, like I could point at my finger and say there's my
finger. Ego seems to be what Pirsig called static
latching.
This is when we hold onto certain static qualities
that no longer are valuable, and might be hurting more
than helping. I looked for this term in Lila and
couldn't find it, but I know he talked about it. Yet,
from what I remember static latching has to do with
not allowing the DQ in ones life. Life becomes
stagnant and paralyzed."
Ego is not static latching. Ego is degenerative.
Static latching is motivated by DQ. Ego can churn an
anti-static pattern as follows in this quote:
Pirsig (Ch. 29) "Sometimes it's an ego pattern
that says, 'I'm too important to be doing all this
dumb static stuff.' Sometimes the contrary
anti-static drive becomes a static pattern of its own.
This contrary stuff can become a tiger-ride where you
can't get off and you have to keep riding and riding
until the tiger finally throws you and devours you.
The degenerative contrarian stuff usually goes that
way. Drugs, illicit sex, alcohol and the like."
