[Platt]
"On the way back to his own flat, Winston sees the inscriptions announcing
INGSOC or English Socialism of which Newspeak was the vocabulary."

[Arlo]
Orwell himself stated that "Every line of serious work that I have written since
1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for
democratic Socialism, as I understand it," he wrote in 1946." I can see how
that's inconvenient for you. But there it is.

Let's remind the folk that Orwell wrote this of "Newspeak".

"The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the
[Party's] world-view and mental habits ... , but to make all other modes of
thought impossible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once
and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought - that is, a thought
diverging from the principles of [the Party] - should be literally unthinkable,
at least so far as thought is dependent on words. Its vocabulary was so
constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning
that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other
meanings and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods. This
was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating
undesirable words, and by stripping such words as remained of unorthodox
meanings... .Newspeak was designed not to extend but to diminish the range of
thought..."

This is simply part and parcel of tactics employed by both political parties, as
power institutions, in a game designed to both distort and destract from the
dialogue. Of course, those Party Jesters caught up in the game who live by the
idiotic dichotomy where "all evil is perpetuated by the other party" while "my
party is wholesome and pure" are simply evidencing Orwell's point.

[Platt]
Newspeak is still the favored vocabulary of the Marxist left. Illegal aliens
become "undocumented workers." Favored treatment of minorities becomes
"Affirmative Action." Muslim terrorists becomes "Insurgents." Students
displaying the American flag become "insensitive."

[Arlo]
"Newspeak" is also the favored vocabulary of the Fascist right (since we are
using "scare tactics"). George Lakoff has written extensively on this.
"Pro-life" and "values voter" are two, "feminazi" and my personal favorite the
"Patriot Act" are others.

You are right, of course, about the aforementiond examples you provide. Hannity
blasted major news sources, justifiably, yesterday is reporting "Explosions
Rock Egypt", implying that "they just sorta happened". But until you stop being
nothing but a Party Propagandaist, you're missing 1/2 the problem... but being
a Happy Party Jester...

So, Platt, join us in the real world where Orwell is an avowed "Democratic
Socialist" and Newspeak is a sin of both parties.
