Ant McWatt suggested to Stephen H August 9th:
If you really want to better understand the basis of Pirsig's moral
framework, my I direct you towards Steve Hagen's "What the Buddha Taught"
and "The Meeting of East & West" by F.S.C. Northrop (one of the books
mentioned in ZMM). In the latter text, Northrop also examines the
historical background of the Catholic tradition in North America.
Marsha V pointed out August 8th:
Ant,
I think that is Steven Hagen's book "Buddhism Plain and Simple". It's an
excellent book.
Ant McWatt comments:
Thanks for the correction Marsha, it is indeed "Buddhism Plain and Simple"
by Steve Hagen!
"What the Buddha Taught" was by Walpola Rahula. Again that's another
Quality book about Buddhism though it was Hagen's text that Pirsig
recommended to me (as being one of the best to show the similarities between
the MOQ and Zen Buddhism).
Best wishes,
Anthony.
"I would answer to the question he asks that you are not a Buddhist with the
ability to rephrase Buddhism in scientific language but a philosopher using
Buddhist and scientific ideas."
McWatt to Pirsig, April 1998
"Correct. While I am thinking about it there is a very good book on
Buddhism recently out called 'Buddhism, Plain and Simple', by Steve Hagen
and published by Turtle. I recommend you get it because it shows the
similarities, between the MOQ and Zen Buddhism more clearly than any other I
have seen."
Pirsig to McWatt, May 6th 1998.
