"Now, the quantum postulate implies that any observation of atomic phenomena
will involve an interaction with the agency of observation not to be
neglected. Accordingly, an independent reality in the ordinary physical
sense can neither be ascribed to the phenomena nor to the agencies of
observation." (The Philosophy of Niels Bohr Page 110)
Dan comments:
I know this is jumping in a little deeply, but please note the last
sentence. It appears to me that Bohr is saying there is no independent
reality in the ordinary sense. Do you read it that way too?
[Case]
Bohr seems to be saying that our previous understanding of physics is
fatally flawed and our current view is shaky. But it seems a stretch to me
to think that he means there is nothing there at all confusing our
observations. Better to say there is something there to look at, we just
don't know quite how to describe it anymore. At least that's what it sounds
like to me. It is interesting to note that, more than the uncertainty
principle he seems disturbed by Planck's quantum shifts where particles jump
from one state to another but do not exist in the gap.
