David,
I can't think of a specific quote whilst he was actually "writing ZMM"

We know he was intending "to write a great book" in his Chicago days
and we know that as soon as ZMM was published various interviews
describe him working on a book "on plains indians" ... which by
implication he must already have been working on ... collecting his
index cards, etc. That book only morphed into Lila and a deeper expose
on the MoQ much later than the Hudson trip itself.

I'll scan other sources.
