I don't know anyone who thinks they own the word or concept of 'pet' or 'rock',
but the first person to think of a pet rock had something no one else had.

Ah, but this "thought" does not emerge in isolation, only as part of an ongoing
historical dialogue. As Rob Base and DJ Jazzy Jeff say, "It takes two."
Understanding this is key to seeing that privileging either the individual or
the "collective" is misguided. Both swirl together in unavoidable dialogicity.
(Well, you could remove the person from the swirl, but you'd end up with a
biological pattern only).
