We're agreed, the Descartes view cast in stone a damaging separation
between the mental me and the physical world, but did not invent the
two (internal / external) perspectives. (Did you ever see the David
Lavery stuff ... on Descartes ?)
Your words, Mike, link very well to Mark's earlier point about some
sq's being "too static" for our future good. Not just a latch, but a
mill-stone, an anchor, a dead-weight. (Think of Otis elevators)
