I can't speak for anyone but myself but purpose implys that some future
state causes changes in the present behavior. In the case of your jar of
oil and water. Once you inject it with dynamic quality by shaking it up,
the behavior in the jar becomes chaotic. After a time it settles into a
steady state of duality: oil and water. If you want to define the purpose
of oil as stating away from water, you can but it seems anthropomorpic and
trivial to me. Viewed that way the ulitmate purpose of the universe is the
dissipation of all dynamic quality into heat death. Not a purpose that
sets my pulse to racing although my wife in convinced I have embrassed it.
