[MD] Voting

Marsha, Arlo,

Boring middle-ground again I'm afraid, I have mixed views about this.
We live in an increasingly electronic comms based world, and in the UK
too there have been selected trials of electronic-only voting systems.

We must definitely take an interest (a vigilance) in how voting is
counted and how we are assured of fair-play. After all, even paper
voting requires observers and audits, where even the would-be leaders
of advanced civilisations are not above stretching the rules.

Personally - I think we'll end up with rapid real-time electronic
voting & counting, supported by "generated" paper trails created only
for retrospective audits on re-counts & disputes. The votes themselves
will require reasonably advanced individual identity based security
... as do on-line commercial transactions.
