I guess where we really part company is with the idea that science's
assumptions amount to doctrine.
DM: Do you know anyone in phil of science or history of science who would
agree with you here? People get attached to their assumptions, that makes
them a doctrine, of course, some hold them loose, some with fervour, but we
people are people and get more attached than not.

I think this is a bit like dmb's beef with faith. I do not think there are
very many in philosophy of science who hold that science is "doctrine" in
any kind of religious sense. Russell, Popper, Kuhn, Polanyi, Dennett, are a
very diverse group but I don't think any of them claim that science is
dogmatic and beyond question.
