Hello Ham,
You said:
"If a philosopher makes morality the basis of his
ontology, it seems to me
that he has an obligation to leave no room for doubt
as to its origin and
location, function in the universe, and relevance to
man's existence."
You also said:
"If the intellect, consciousness, and morality
are all something we 'tap into'..."
I (SA) said:
"Maybe the difficulty is in us trying to place an
origin for these things we call morals as something
definite, pin-point, and going from one place to
another place. (Thus, the morals moving from here to
eventually over there. A line.)"
When you said "tap into" I notice a movement.
This movement is either birth (we are not here, then
here), or this movement is from one state of mind to
another state of mind. There may be other proposed
movements that occur in this universe dealing with
this 'tapping into', I am not sure at this moment. I
stated, 'the difficulty is in us trying to place an
origin for these things we call morals as something
definite, pin-point..." etc... because of this
movement I sense with our thoughts on the matter.
This is what I mean I will try to fit this together
now. The line, such as going from point A
----to----point B, is a notion to movement. If, we
"tap into" morals, then we are suggesting a movement,
a line being draw from where morals are and where
morals are not. Yet, if, we are saying morals are
here, then there is no line drawing only Here, Center
Everywhere, or in other words what happens here also
happens over there at the same time. For instance,
when a bird flies over a pond, it would seem to birds'
reflection is occuring at the same exact time that the
bird is over the point where the reflection is
occuring. The reflection of the bird is not the bird
flying over the pond, but we have a relationship, a
connection between one thing happening and another
thing happening without a line or movement or delay
between the two seemingly different objects.
What does this have to do with morality? When
humankind tries to or does create these behaviors,
laws, and guidance to what we have defined and still
may define as being a moral act/thought or not, what I
am suggesting is that we also put this creation of
ours (morality) into play and a reflection on the pond
(the rest of the universe) relates in some form or
manner with these moral creations of ours, or vice
versa - the universe has morals and relates with us
and we see morals reflect in ourself. No movement
from universe to us or us to universe - just an
occurrance happening once and thus everywhere.
What is morality? What is its' clear definition?
It is what we hash out in ethics, in the courts, and
generally between ourselves. As what we apparently
perceive as creating morality and further provide a
definition of where it is in our daily and nightly
lives we seem to build or grow in age with its'
definition. Our habits change with mindful attention
to what morality is now. Those defintions of the past
that exist today whether difficult or easy to behave
such definitions becomes a valued choice by the
individual and societies who apparently create good
morals or just become more focused on good morals that
are contrasted by ungood morals if this is the choice.
Could some people have a more defined thought-out,
mindful and enacted sense of moral behavior? Sure,
because their rules and behaviors take into account a
growing sense of what is good for a growing life. A
life based on the intention of birth. What is the
intention of a birth based on life? Experiences of a
person mindful of morals supply thoughts about one's
own actions, and these reflected thoughts based on the
experiences that are moral. By moral we might mean -
our actions based on an intention of life which is
birth. By weighing what births (creations) have an
inertia for continued life (compassion) and what
births (creations) have an inertia for degradation
(too much need and desire calling out for more and
more compassion from others and themselves) we choose,
experience, and are mindful of what lifes' action and
its' rules of being or morals. This was or is one
event in life here with this earth and sky.
