Hi Khaled,

Puzzling, isn't it? I can think of 3 reasons why Iran would play-up
its nuclear ambitions:

1. It genuinely wants nuclear-powered electricity.
2. The fundamentalist theocrats in charge of Iran know perfectly well
that the suspicion of WMD provides the perfect way for the US
adminstration to sell a war to its citizens (after all, it worked for
Iraq). And war is exactly what the proponents of violent, extremist
Islam want, in order to radicalise the moderate Muslims of the world.
3. The increasing tensions (represented by the cartoon controversy as
well as the nuclear scare) suit the fundamentalist theocrats of Iran
just as much as they suit the hard-right leadership of America. This
is the "1984" scenario, where both sides (fundamentalist Islamic and
neo-conservative) use the fear of the other side in order to control
their citizens. Basically, the extremists on both sides can only
remain in power by virtue of the high-alert war atmosphere.

2 and 3 are clearly linked, and need not exclude 1 from being true as
well. The over-riding theme is that both the US and Iranian
leaderships are encouraging the WMD-propaganda in order to ensure that
we go to war. Those of us who equally despise both neo-conservatism
and fundamentalist-Islam can only hope to stay out of the cross-fire.
For this reason, I'm extremely glad that UK newspapers have refrained
from publishing the cartoons.

Regards,
Mike
