Arlo, Mike, Platt and y'all:

dmb says:
I could not resist...

Arlo said to Platt:
I dunno, Platt. From what I've heard of ol' Manilow, he has quite a
"biological appeal". What is Copacabana if not the grinding, sweaty
gyrations of sexual abandon? What is Mandy if not a serenade to induce
sexual passions?

Platt replied:
If you can see no difference in Manilow's videos and those of your average
rock and roll group, I see no hope for development of your artistic level
sensibilities.

dmb says:
Barry Manilow is a whore and nobody with an ounce of taste thinks he is an
artist. He started out singing ("you deserve a break today") and writing
jingles (I am stuck on band-aids, cause band-aid's stuck on me") for the
advertising industry and developed his live act in the bath houses of New
York city. He is known in the gay community as "Barely A ManAlone" because,
apparently, he can't stand to be alone and consequently he's quite the slut.
Now he's playing Vegas and putting out cover tunes that are, according to
the critics, much worse than the originals. Friends, it just doesn't get
much sleazier or cheesier than that. In my book, it just figures that Platt
would hold him up as an icon of Quality. It also cracks me up. I think its
safe to say that if we relied upon Platt's artistic sensibilities to inform
us as to what has quality and what does not, we'd be seriously hurting.

And isn't it true that the most magical thing about music occurs when we're
hearing something totally fresh and new, something we haven't heard before?
How does that sqaure with saying an album of 50 year-old bland cover tunes
from a tacky pop star from Vegas? It doesn't. That's what cracks me up.

For some reason I'm reminded of the time I went to see Neil Young at Red
Rocks. He was doing something new. There was a movie sort of thing going on
and I heard some new songs that really blew me away. Well, I almost heard
them. I could have heard them if it weren't for the obnoxious dinosaur
sitting a few rows back. He didn't want to hear anything except the Neil
Young songs we've all heard a thousand times and shouted his demands over
the music through most of the show. I was thinking he really should try to
take in something new and I was thinking he owed me about $100 for concert
tickets. Finally, the crowd starting throwing trash at him and he finally
shut up. So I guess that what I'm doing here. I'm throwing some trash at
Platt and thinking he really should try to take in something new, stop
living in the past. Besides that, I've heard the music of the 50's and it
seems like its always about sex and romance, except when its completely
inane, singing about doggies in the window and such.

If you're looking for a melodious contemporary vocalist, try Nora Jones. She
has sold lots of records, won at least one major grammy and sings like an
angel. If you want something safe, and predictable and non-threatening, Nora
is your gal. Her dad used to play with the Beatles.

And just for fun, here's a song (the lyrics anyway) that makes me cry,
although I'm not sure why. Something about the destruction of freedom and
beauty, I guess. This woman is in my dreams. She haunts me. Its Neil Young's
"Unknown Legend"...

She used to work in a diner
Never saw a woman look finer
I used to order just to watch her float across the floor
She grew up in a small town
Never put her roots down
Daddy always kept movin’, so she did too.

Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a harley-davidson
Her long blonde hair flyin’ in the wind
She’s been runnin’ half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin’ with the very air she breathes
The air she breathes.

You know it ain’t easy
You got to hold on
She was an unknown legend in her time
Now she’s dressin’ two kids
Lookin’ for a magic kiss
She gets the far-away look in her eyes.

Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a harley-davidson
Her long blonde hair flyin’ in the wind
She’s been runnin’ half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin’ with the very air she breathes
The air she breathes.

Thanks
dmb
