Ham,
I don't find your definition of philosophy unusual
at all. Rather I am showing how naive I am to what
might be a basic necessity to talking about
philosophy, which is one should know its' definition.
Yet, the questioning the professor had in the oriental
course was either to expand the students mind to
accept a greater definition than what has been
traditionally understood in western philosophy; or
just the opposite, he was putting forth a question
that has the student wonder if oriental philosophy
should not be called philosophy but something else. I
know the Dali Lama calls his teachings 'a way of life'
or he has also said that they are more a psychology
than a religion and so forth. Yet, Zen is everyday
life, which I take that to mean philosophy, too, a
living non-dogmatic philosophy.
Well, anyways... Yeah, I do have much to read,
especially since I am almost done with "Zen Mind,
Beginner's Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki, Lila should be in
the mail today, your thesis, and this other book you
have suggested to me looks interesting and informative
as well. Time to go.
Have a Good Afternoon,
SA
