Do you really want to understand?
May I suggest a few books by Karen Armstrong. Just go to amazon and type
her name as author.
The sad truth is that part of the world has always been at a crossroads.
The romans, the Persians, the crusades, the children's crusade, The
Muslim empire, the ottomans just to name a few. The colonialism of the
last century has not helped either.
It's also been a clash of cultures between East and West, well actually
west and Middle east, considering east to be India and beyond. An example
of that is the internal conflict within Israel between the western Jews
and the "Arab Jews" ( google that and see where it takes you ) also known
as Mizrahis.
Christianity got westernized when it went to Rome, some of is still
easternized and they are having their own conflicts ( peaceful ones) yet
conflicts.
The church of the Holy Sepulcher is a prime example. A Muslim Family in
Jerusalem holds the key to the church, they lock the door every night and
open it every morning. The Ethiopian Christians have laid claim to the
roof ( squatters right( since there is no more room inside.
Too much pride, ignorance and lack of enlighten, limited space,
ecological mess ( Beirut is a city of 3 million with no sewer treatment
plants ) are all contributing factors.
