[Platt to Robert W.]
I wish we could avoid conflicts by shouting "tolerance" to those dedicated
to our destruction. But just as pleas for compassion failed to deter the
attack of 9/11, I know of no words that will stop the forces of evil.

[Arlo]
That's right. We must do more than just shout for tolerance. We must earn
it. If actions do not match the request, "tolerance" will likely not ensue.
Not from them towards us, and not from us towards them. Conflict is always
the result of injustice and fear, real or perceived. One can not do
injustice, and expect to be tolerated in return. And when one is accused of
an injustice, one must be able to either demonstrate how the accusation is
in err, or admit to culpability. This is, by the way, a condemnation of
both "sides" in the present situation. We, for example, can not supply arms
to Iranians and Iraqis so that they would kill each other, or drop napalm
on civilian streets, and then expect "tolerance" in return. And they, for
example, can not burn down foreign embassies, or call for assassinations,
and expect "tolerance" in return. But this hypocrisy is typical of
right-wing fanaticism, where "we" are "always justified", and "they" are
"always unjustified". And again, that's a condemnation of both sides, not
just us, and not just them. Both.

This is not a war of society versus biology. This is a pissing match
between right-wing fanatics who refuse to do anything more than posture
their Righteousness.
