Arlo, that was good. I'm gonna frame this one.
The American University and its hospital in Beirut were a symbol of the
Good America has to offer the world. The few times my dad had to be taken
to an emergency room, his first choice was the AUB.
America. Never hated, especially its people. The polititians is another
story.
The respect and regard people had for America in that part of the world
would surprise a lot of people in this country.
Then again we do stupid things. Here are a few of the milestones where
had the US chose the other path, the whole Arab world would be defending
America to the death.
1. Tuning Gam al Abu Maser to the communist camp by refusing him the
money from the world bank to build the Aswan dam. John Foster Dulles is
to blame for that one.
2. Returning the Shah back to power after a Democratic election.
Operation Ajax. The grandson of Davis Eisenhower to blame for that one.
He told them that Mosadegh was a comie.
3. Supporting the state of israel to exist beyond it's 1948 U.N. mandated
borders and turning a blind eye to its apartheid policies.
4. Arms for hostages deals. Iran Iraq war. Fanning the flames from both
ends.
Which brings us to the new brouhaha over the Dubai Port deal. Iran has
plans that would be damaging to our economy far more damaging than any
glow-in-the-dark bombs. They want to take the oil trade from the Dollar
standard to the Euro standard. ( Remember Nixon took us of the gold
standard and the only reason our dollar is good is because of TRUST)
Iran, Venezuela and a few others are ready for that change. We are
talking weeks. The Arab Gulf states are contemplating that too. Oh yeah
China and Russia are cool with that too.
So the current administration is trying to stop Saudi and Company of
taking the Euro Too.
With a little bit of humbleness, fairness, stewardship and looking beyond
our noses we can have lots and lots of allies.
To befriend the few, we alienate the millions
