Margaret, 

     Yes, exactly, I sense you are saying what I said
previously in the Barbarian Attack.  I would fight
anybody that harms my wife and family, but I don't
have the strong community bond to wage war.  I think
once fighting reaches the societal level, then we are
losing not just intellectual value, but the quality of
any creative spirit is being demolished left and
right.  The individual level, that's were peace begins
and must end.
     I agree with you about changing states as well. 
If we do sit back and see what is happening, then this
could be as you said, "see it as an abstraction, will
it be a defining moment to us as human beings or would
it have just been a change from one state to another."
 What changes will take place, take place because we
are involved in the motivation of these changes.
