Arlo,
Yes, Platt does combine group sex and hippie
together quite often, and it does become his slogan
and call to arms. Group sex and hippie do not have to
be so tied together as Platt would like to make it
seem to be. What I am about to say is different from
Platt's approach to sex, but I wonder if Platt took
group sex/hippie and uncombined them, I wonder if he
is meaning to point out what I am saying as follows:
(if Platt wants to keep group sex/hippie combined,
then Platt you are unwilling to see what other people
are really talking about and blindly overlap your
views and put words into people's mouths on this point
a great deal.)
I personally do not want the bombardment of sex
such as that I hear coming from the under 17 girls
that I supervise as staff in a youth residential
facility in the music they listen to. Why? Because
it does not stop at the music with these girls. They
desire sex at their young age, and some are on birth
control that we provide due to some formality I'm
sure. Is it because we give them birth control they
have sex. Well, they probably feel safe with it,
thus, it is not a barrier. Yet, they are having sex
so the organization, their PO (parole officer),
caseworker, judge, parents (at times), and so forth
want them to have birth control because of the social
issues that will arise if they do have children. Yet,
are they at this facility because they are sex crazed?
No, they are at this program because of a number of
other reasons, but sex is lurking in the background
very well involved at some level. They are here
because of their anger, running away from home, denial
of authority in conflicted ways (hitting their parents
or teachers), drug and alcohol addiction that further
impedes upon their life, stealing, cannot interact
hardly at all with peers (getting into fights, arguing
a lot, emotionally incoherent and not focused upon
what might be a quality experience), cutters (prone to
suicide), involvement with gangs, continually not
going to school with no future safety net or plans
that they themselves can provide self-sufficiently in
any manner (including economically on their own), and
etc... Is it their fault? Maybe, but I think they
are products of this culture and therefore their
decisions are based on what options they have in this
culture, after they repeatedly keep making certain low
quality decisions over and over again. By low
quality, I mean in general, and also I mean low
quality based upon what this current culture deems
acceptable and high quality. Where does sex fit into
this picture? Well, they sing about it, they want it,
and the situation they are in at this point, would not
be a high quality decision to continually have sex,
especially if they would have a baby amidst all the
other problems involved in their lives at this time
within the options this culture has to currently offer
for them. Yet, the issue of control and how much do
we as society, not just their parents (in which some
definitely could use a stronger intellect at times
themselves), have to stop them on the inertial path
they themselves as youth are already upon?
