[MD] Where have all the values gone?

Hello,

Yes I think overconsumption can be a self-destructive tendency like any addiction. Everybody has their weaknesses/addictions and should work on them.
I don't think all anti-consumerists are unmaterialistic... If you constantly put your attention to who owns what seems like a materialistic ATTITUDE.
Could addictive thoughts be considered an addiction that is self-destructive?
There is a Tom Robbins quote "the more advertising I see the less I want to buy".
To me is that you to need to critical of advertising but not in the Bill Hicksian "die advertisers, die advertisers" sense (which is sick "humor" intent to brainwash others.) Everybody knows that advertisers are trying to sell something. Some are better at monitoring themselves...is this something I really want or need.
I think that self-monitoring should be encouraged.
The idea of protecting others by eliminating advertising is pompous...I can see through the advertising manipulative attempts but not my dumbass neighbor. Yes there are individuals differences but come on this Let's control the environment so we can create the kind of people we want sounds like playing god to me.

So yes everybody wants to sell you something (even anti-consumerists) and I believe letting the individual decide for themselves if they want to buy into it.
You have your vision of an ideal world and you have every right to pursue it but so do advertisers.

Let me put it this way because I was just reading about identity development in adolescence. There is the active pursuit of an identity and there is reacting to what you don't want (less helpful).Or in other words look for what are you pro---what inspires you, pursue it.

Let me clarify something here, earlier I blamed the decay on consumerism,
Platt labeled bad.

Maybe the word here should be Over consumerism. After all eating is not
bad, overeating is bad.

The values immigrants brought with them, were of conservation: Values,
money, spending, indulgence.

So Platt, how about a short list of these values you admire and say are
missing today. I think we are on the same page here, I am just trying to
find out if you agree with ALL the values that those new comers brought
with them or just say the moral and religious ones. That's all.

How would those people view our "
over-indulgence-lets-shop-till-we-drop-max-that-card-out" attitude.
