Very interesting set of responses so far.  
 
Case places principled personal values at the social level because they  
depend on "shared history." (That would also seem to apply to the  
intellectual level, so the distinction between the two levels is  
unclear.)

Just to clarify: I said that the intellectual level IS shared history.
Individuals, principled or not, can eat and breed biologically. They can
participate in society with or without principles or even consciousness as
with the case of Teri Shaivo. Principled behavior can only be evaluated
within a shared set of values and ideas.
