I only just followed-up this thread too.

I didn't find the essay earth shattering, just educational.
In the "Existence before essence" mantra I don't see anything other
than the point that essences are conceptalisations that must come
after (at least some) experience.

You can work backwards to Plato in your metaphysics to posit that the
essences are therefore something more fundamental than the individual
experiences, but it's old news that this is just a scientific
convenience, a "deemed ontology", reflecting experience naturally, but
not any kind of reality in itself.

I read existentialism, as putting "existence" first, but I believe
post Pirsig and other Eastern influenced philsophers, we are actually
well beyond that and asking the altogether more interesting question
"Yes, but what exactly is this existence thing."
