[MD] This is riduclous

Matt,

I can't say that I'm all that down on mailing lists. On the other hand, I'm
not competent in the way of computers nor do I have an argument.

Since I don't really know what we are dealing with, I was wondering if you
could fill in the blanks on the user end (as Horse will no doubt judge
alternatives from an admistrative end, given what he is able and willing to
do): what alternatives are there? For instance, what is "PhBB"?

I've worked with a number of different "discussion group" interfaces, and to
tell you the truth I've always preferred my MD's e-mail posting apparatus.
If we had the alternative ways of setting something up, perhaps we might
better be able to judge what might work the best for us.

And don't forget: inertia isn't a great reason for keeping something, but as
Larry Sanders used to say with a wince, "Too much change is bad for the
system." The bigger the structural change, the greater the chance that you
permenantly lose participants. We all might ask ourselves, particularly
old-timers, "Do I take part in the MD because I enjoy it, or I really have
something I want to say, or I like the people there, or I like the topics
discussed--or do I take part because it's a habit?" All the former myriad
reasons take part in creating a habitual practice, but the more the earlier
ones wane, the more stress is placed on habit. And if that habit is broken,
for whatever reason, it might be replaced by something different.

Then again, maybe one wouldn't want people here only out of habit.

Matt

p.s. Remember, though, Matt: this isn't a democracy--Horse runs the show.
Horse owns the site and if there are reasons Horse doesn't want to shift,
there's nothing much anybody could do about it save vote with their feet.
That doesn't mean Horse is a tyrant--far from it. It means that I don't do
a damn thing for the website admistratively or financially, so I leave all
of those decisions in Horse's lap with the faith that he'll do what he can.
We can all act the advisor, but in this admistration--Horse is the decider.
