Gene, also you have these people called Hindus
and Tibetan Buddhist, and if you include the spiritual
aspect of the lineage of Christian and Hebrew beliefs
there is a quality of our 'self' that [in order] goes
back to the oneness of Brahma, the consciousness of
the Bardo worlds of Tibetan monks, the sinful aspect
of our nature that began with Adam continued onward no
matter how many new people appear in the world this
sin and goodness is past on and we, as people, have
traits from Adam and Eve that Christ died to forgive
for all and the Hebrew people are a people that the
spirit of G-d creates; and we are made in the image of
G-d, which is a spiritual lineage that birth and death
are but a continuance, not an end and a beginning of
something.
Let's look at this another more current secular,
cultural way - evolution. We are not a separate,
divided being from our parents. Our parents,
biologically, pass on DNA, in their coupling of
chromosomes, THEIR is the key word, a new human being,
not out of no where but from our parents biology we
become. This has happened throughout time to what
paleoanthropologist say ca. 120,000 years ago in
Africa when Homo sapiens first became a distinct
species. This species comes from previous species
back to a common ancestor of the chimpanzee, binobo,
gorilla, monkeys, lemurs, and as one goes back into
the depths where a paleontologist studies the first
chordata (a creature with a spinal cord) goes into the
400-500 million years ago range. Take this back even
further and one enters into the field of astronomy.
Astronomers state that nebulae are clouds of dust and
elements, which have molecular clouds (carbon monoxide
is one example of a molecule found in these). These
form into stars. The studies that connect stars, to
formations of planets, to life on earth are all
evolutionary sequences that compound into complex
creatures, humankind, etc... This is current science.
So, spiritual lineage, scientific explanations of
biological lineage, chemistry lineage, and we are born
of stars, stars are born of hot and cold densities -
evolution puts a current cultural veil of probability
that has become highly probable, enough so that
science has taken on this lineage born of spiritual
lineage to a G-d that is one and everywhere in all and
all.
Science has been using James Hutton's (18th
century) statement/concept "...the physical, chemical,
and biological laws that operate today have operated
in the past," which is called uniformitarianism.
Therefore what we notice now such as rain, streams,
the formation of river deltas today (their current
appearance and laying down of matters in a orderly
fashion) can be found in the rock strata and one can
look at rock formations and say, 'only a delta could
have made such a formation'. The birth of stars (the
further away from earth the deeper into the past we
observe), all of these realities compound into the
Theory of Evolution and so what we can study now can
be assumed to have happened in the past. This
assumption that what we have not empirically
experienced in the past can still be determined by
what data we empirically collect in the present is
what Theories can master.
The connection of the non-empirical world with
the empirical world. In this connection, this joining
of the past and present we, as humankind, use theories
that can be tested and changed. They become highly
probable, but not evasive of change, new data, and
thus, can be concluded in time to be incorrect to the
point that either the theory changes or a new theory
must emerge. We are not separated from anything. One
way or another connections are made.
This connection aspect, where we like to put
things together, has been defined as spirituality (the
oneness of all), engineering (making cars), society
(we are social creatures), etc... All of these have
been studies as well. All of these aspects of our
'self' have been noticed as possible influences to
'how we conclude and come to results in our thinking'.
This is what philosophy must understand and does take
into account. We think this way because we are
social. We like relationships. Therefore our
conclusions will be based on how well we can put
'things' together and we have even come up with
another term to define this called logic, rationality,
and reason. The world out there can be in here, as in
in our minds. This is the Greek reasoning of the
world. The world is reasonable, and thus, we can
state how and what the world is through this kind of
reasoning. The world is water, a Greek said this long
ago, is this reasoning. By stating the world is water
this Greek said the world. Concluded the world with a
reasonable statement that in time logic built more and
more precise ways to conclude the world, then science
came along to test our hypothesis. Then what other
cultures have noticed, and this scientific culture
came to conclude as well, especially in the early
1900's with probability theory in quantum physics, is
the universe has this uncertainity we can talk about,
but to put this orderly sequence this uncertainty can
not happen. We can discuss what this uncertainty is,
but to put it into a ordered definition of if this
happens, then this certainly will happen - can not
happen. In probability this and this can happen, but
not with 100 percent certainty. This orderly way of
looking at the world, is, correct me if I'm wrong,
what Pirsig traced back to Aristotle.
Now what of everyday living. What of hunting and
gathering (grocery store shopping), meditation
(thinking and relaxing), and these other necessary
aspects of life that occur. Well, this is what the
Zen monk practices everyday. This is what the shaman
has done throughout time. To be able to join, to
connect the spiritual world with the profane/secular
world. The Zen monk meditates and then tries to have
what occurs in meditation in his/her everyday living,
even washing the dishes, this concept is known as
zazen. The shaman goes to the underworld or finds the
universal, center tree of life comes back and this
ceremony, this performance while others in the village
watch and partake in some form or fashion, singing,
with musical instruments, etc... The 'self' is
renewed, the world is reborn, or in other words, the
world is recognized for how it always has been and the
dream-time is here once again. The origin or original
way is here seen again for all who have drifted,
forgotten, or sense we, as humans, have limited scope
and experience can not be the universe and all that it
is, we have ceremony that has lifted (or whatever word
you choose) our awareness to a sense that is beyond
us, as individuals and society, etc...
Thanks,
SA
