Finally I have a definition I can accept. I always thought that Static
meant unchanging, and wondered why Pirsig applied it to the evolutionary
world which is constantly in flux. I also thought Dynamic Quality was
supposed to be the constant immutable source, hence couldn't fathom his use
of Dynamic. How is it that there are many here who've shared my confusion,
yet have been unble to define it?

[Case]
I have argued for this view for almost a year now. I understand that it is
not the received view and that it may not even be Pirsig's view. But I think
it is a more satisfying view and have repeatedly argued as much at length. I
think what Pirsig waxes on poetically about as DQ is actually a state of
harmony between static and dynamic properties. I think we as creatures are
tuned biologically to respond to this harmony.

[Ham]
Is it your philosophical goal to eliminate unpredictability?

[Case]
No my goal is to understand it and how it impacts us as creatures.

[Ham]
That's right. We can't know empirically the source of our existence or the
purpose of our life. But where you see this as a tragedy, I see it as
preserving the autonomy of free choice. If man had the key to absolute
knowledge, how could he be free to choose for himself? He would be a mere
robot following a prescribed trajectory. What purpose or meaning would this
serve? Would he even bother living?

[Case]
Uncertainty ensures that life will not be predictable. And freedom of
choices is nothing but a source of uncertainty that each human being
introduces into the environment around them. Meaning and purpose are
individual choices that guide each person, at least as long as they bother
to continue living. I don't see these as especially tragic. Mostly it seems
comic.

I have snipped to argument about the nature of philosophy. I have no doubt
that we will find a way to get back to it in some other form another day.
But for the moment I have an idea. It occurs to me that one of the reasons,
you are not seeing the significance of what I am getting at here, is that
you don't really "see" what I am talking about. If you will grant me about
15 of your time I can give you the first of a couple of demonstrations of
why I think this is significant.

You may have seen this before but please indulge me. I am starting a new
thread call The Game of Life. I will post a set of instructions and a link
there. Please don't comment in that thread until you have followed the
directions. Or if you have questions about following them. When you have had
a chance to check this out we can talk.

Just 15 minutes maybe less, maybe more but only if you are having fun.

Fair enough? Ham? Platt? Anybody?
