Hi Platt, Arlo, and whoever else who cares about
whether an amoeba responds to DQ,
As MOQists we are all happy to postulate that reality
is Quality. Quality is the source from which we derive
experience. Pirsig suggested that there are lots of
ways to make a first cut of Quality, and for the most
part we go along with the dynamic-static first cut to
understand our own experience to the extent that we
are able to overcome our SOM thinking.
However, it doesn't make much sense to me to imagine
that a cat or an amoeba can undertand it's experience
better by thinking about static versus dynamic
Quality. Since we postulate that reality is Quality it
follows naturally to say that from the amoeba's
perspective reality is Quality too, but I don't think
an amoeba can make dynamic-static distinctions, and I
don't think it's at all useful to imagine it making
such a distinction to understand how an amoeba
behaves, so I would give an answer of mu to the
question of whether the amoeba is responding to static
or dynamic quality. I think that the dynamic-static
first cut is only for us to understand our own
experience. I would say that the amoeba is Quality and
responds to Quality and leave it at that.
Thanks,
Steve
