DMB: It was a tool put in the service of social values. Back then,
such quasi-intellectual tools were still embedded in the social realm.
DM: Interesting that you have to say 'quasi', maybe we should
just say plain old intellectual tools. So these tools are available
to support social values. The 4th level perhaps comes when
individuals or groups are able to use these tools against static
social structures to create the possibility of being individuals rather
than a member of a caste or class. Although to argue against
myself, in traditional pre-intellectual societies, do not the higher
classes or royalty have enough freedom to become individuals
determining their own destinies to some extent?
