Hi DM, Platt, DMB, all,
DMB said: It was a tool put in the service of social values. Back then,
such quasi-intellectual tools were still embedded in the social realm.
DM said: Interesting that you have to say 'quasi', maybe we should
just say plain old intellectual tools. So these tools are available
to support social values.
Steve says:
Since, like Platt, DMB thinks of the levels as types of people rather than types of patterns of value, he is forced to think about such things as "quasi-intellectual tools" embedded in some place called "the social realm" rather than thinking of individual people as social entities and intellectual patterns as patterns of manipulations of symbols.
It has been interesting to me to see these two have the same interpretation of the levels in this way but have such different views about which type of person this intellectual type is and which is the social type. They both want to put different people "on the biological level" or "on the intellectual level." They both think that the other is a social type person.
While Pirsig uses Lila to illustrate biological values and Rigel social values, etc., I don't think he ever uses the "on the ____ level" phrase that is so prevalent in this discussion group.
Regards,
Steve
