Arlo objected:
...here Pirsig makes a serious mistatement. He's saying that we should not
include ants within the social level because they are objective and
detactable by scientific instruments, but this is a serious MOQ mistake.
...For a more emphasized example, consider primates. What scientific
instrument can detect the difference between the "alpha male" and a
"commoner"?

dmb says:
A scale. The alpha male will be bigger. A video camera might be a good way
to document the fact that the alpha male is getting a lot more nookie than
the commoners. Ah, its good to be the king!

[Case]
While the largest male is usually the alpha male, this is not always the
case. Jane Goodall documented an instance where a smaller male was able to
dominate the group by virtue of his cunning.

Perhaps, because we are sensitive to the cues, it is relatively easier to
spot alpha males in human groups because of our modes of dress. It is common
place to assume we can gauge the amount of nookie males get by the cars they
drive. "There's nothing like a Bentley"
