That is a quote from Pirsig. A member of this discussion group named Dan Glover published a book called Lila's Child based on early discussions on moq.org. Pirsig made comments on the discussions and the notes you are referring to are his notes. The book is available through amazon.com.

As the notes indicate, Pirsig intended to equate the intellectual level with thinking. Be aware that Platt has his own philosophy of the individual where the 4th level is the individual level. Pirsig considers the individual to be a collection of static patterns of all four types with the ability to respond to DQ, so you can see that Platt is talking about something completely different when he equates the individual with just the fourth level that should not be confused with the moq. At least that's what I've been trying to point out to Platt in this thread.

As for whether the social level is also the site of activity of the mind, it depends on what you mean by mind. Pirsig defined intellect as the manipulation of abstract symbols that stand for patterns of experience, and this sort of thinking is what he means by mind.

Remember that though the levels correspond to types of people, they are actually collections of patterns of value of four types in an evolutionary hierarchy. With the intellectual level, Pirsig is describing the type of value that holds an idea together, and intellectual patterns of value refer to patterns of thought.
