Peter,
This would be a contradiction only if 'thing' were being used in the same sense in both sentences.  Otherwise, it is merely an equivocation.  It is like if I said "I forgot 2 things today: my wallet & my wife's birthday."  That doesn't commit me to saying my wife's birthday is a thing.
