Platt:
Maybe if you read the story of the brujo again, you'd see how an
individual can be better than the society of which he is a part.
Steve:
Is this brujo part of your individual level? If so, we should take a close
look at what his values are so we can better understand your philosophy.

The brujo story is a perennial favorite but I thought there was something
wrong with it from the first time I read it. Pirsig was finding inspiration
for the entire concept of DQ in this story about a guy who basically sells
out his people. It's like glorifying the French Vichy government during
WWII.
In Benedict's text the story serves to illustrate her notion that cultures
tend to exhibit collective personality types, which she seem to be borrowed
from Nietzsche. But she was borrowing the story from Ruth Bunzel and the
reference cited is long out of print and not available. I have a friend in
Boston and was able to con them into getting me a copy off of a microfilm in
the Harvard library. I could only get the pages cited in Benedict's Patterns
of Culture. Pirsig claims of the brujo became a big leader and source of
much knowledge of Zuni culture I could find nothing to back this claim up
and if you read the account in Bunzel you will see that the story is less
sinister than I imagined and far less profound than Pirsig paints it.
I had a PDF of the reference posted for a long time but the link broke. I
just restored and tested it. If you would like a copy of your own to read
follow this link:

If you have problems getting it let me know I will e-mail it to you.
