Thanks for fleshing out the problems of troubled youth and possible causes.
As you rightfully point out, blame cannot be placed on just one part of
the problem, like disfunctional families. As politicians are wont to
say, "There's plenty of blame to go around." To make matters worse, I
suppose your hands are tied as regards punishment of offenders of the
social order since "spar the rod and spoil the child" has become
unfashionable if not illegal.
What I wonder about is seeing young volunteers working during the
vacations from college helping to rebuild weather-destroyed housing
like in New Orleans, or working for Habitat for Humanity, or in church
groups improving the lives of the poor in their communities. It seems
to me with all the work to be done repairing broken homes and lives
that the group you're involved with could be given worthwhile jobs to
do that would challenge their mental and physical capabilities to such
an extent that at night they would be too tired to rebel.
But, it's easy for me sitting in the bleachers while you battle down on
the playing field to toss out unsolicited advice. I'm grateful for the
work you do, and also for your contributions to this site.
Platt
