The story related by Pirsig makes the point that individuals are responsible
for social evolution. Other stories about the brujo are irrelevant.
[Case]
Pirsig is telling his story third hand. Even in the version he lifts from
Benedict, the only redeeming quality the brujo has is that he later is
alleged to have become a great leader of his people. I can find no evidence
for this claim in either Benedict or Bunzel. Even in Pirsig's account the
guy is a weasel, selling out his people to the whites. While the Zunis may
not haven been massacred in cold blood like Big Foot's band of Sioux they
can hardly be said to have prospered under white rule.
[Platt]
By your definition, Reagan and his spawn are in the public interest. As for
our history being full of horrors, they pale in comparison to the horrors
perpetrated by nazism, fascism, Muslim fundamentalism and communism --
especially communism.
[Case]
The warnings of the perils of democracy are legion. They date back at least
to Socrates. We as a people are not immune to snake oil pitchmen and
charlatans like Reagan. But this is how we determine the public interest for
good or ill.
It is hard to imagine anyone applauding atrocities and genocides but while
you are listing them, why do you always leave out our own treatment of
Africans and indigenous Indians. The number of murders and rapes are at
least on a par with the Muslims who are pikers on your list. I would guess
we beat the Nazis and fascists too. And yet you have said in the past we
should not even feel guilty about these crimes and that they "pale" in
comparison to butcheries. For crying out loud man we murdered millions of
people across an entire continent and this is ok with you?
