Gene,

What you've said reinforces something I've been trying to say
elsewhere about the consciousness / free-will / etc. "is an illusion"
meme.

It's as real as "we" are. The illusory aspect, as you say, is that its
appearance is not what it seems from other aspects. It's real enough.
