Hi SA,

I think that a coincidence is either a one-off or the starting formation of a pattern. The mind works by forming patterns. If you see/hear/think one thing, then see/hear/think another which is of
the same type, then that could be called a coincidence[one-off occurrence], or it could be called a pattern[infinite lasting]. The fact that a coincidence is usually composed of only two things and it
takes three or more things to happen for someone to go, "hey there's a pattern here", creates this distinction between the two.

For example, if I see Bob at the start of the day, then at the end of the day I see him somewhere else, it would be like "Wow, we saw each other twice in the same day, what a coincidence!". But then
if we both woke up the next day and again saw each other at the same two places, it would no longer be a coincidece, it would be a pattern because most likely our timetables were in a pattern for us
to meet. I think this distinction helps our understanding when they're seen as two peas of the same pod, thus to answer your question; they are related.

Cheers,

-David.
