Peter,
Philosophy of Science. That was a course I took
at the university. I was surprised to find out how
much you learn in the science classroom comes out of
this philosophy course. Without philosophy science
would be blind. Any data science gets theories need
to be made. Logical philosophers, and others help
scientists make theories. Scientists don't think
about how their data fits into existing theories very
well. To come up with a logical and stable theory it
becomes a coordinated effort by philosophers and
scientists. Scientists see data, but what does that
data mean or how does it fit into existing theories or
maybe this data could evolve a different theory. You
need a philosopher to help you understand much of the
thinking part of science.
Science deals with data, but we think so we to
fit any data about the world into thought it takes
other types of people, not scientists, to figure out
or come up with some thoughts. Then you have those
unique people like Einstein who was not just a
scientist, but an imaginative creative thinker. He
may not have put rhythm to his first thoughts, but it
takes imagination to think outside of existing data to
come up with a new theory. Newton saw a flat world
looking at the universe. Einstein saw curvature.
Both work, but the later is more precise.
Poets and other creative thinkers, think outside
the box, use imagination to think outside the usual
understanding. They break boundaries, and provide new
thoughts or views on an existing picture of the
universe. Scientists or theorists benefit from this
outside of the box thinking. The creativity found any
in a culture flows throughout the culture, keeping the
culture thinking and noticing new things. Without
this thinking and imaginative aspect, science would be
blind. Why? As I said science does not think. I am
not arguing against science. I think science is
awesome. You just have to understand what science
does, as you said collect data, but it takes thinkers
to expand beyond just sandstone to come up with the
idea of an ancient beach (geology). Some scientists
are creative, why? Because humans are creative and we
all think, yet, science does not admit thinking exists
so the philosopher and poet in any of these kinds of
creative scientists needs to come out to put any kinds
of words or thoughts with the data. As you might
notice though, in science these creative acts must
bend to measurements and known understandings about
what the data might be saying. Might be saying,
because in some near future new data could overturn
the old IDEA (not data) about what the data was
THOUGHT to be. The data is not overturned, it is the
IDEAS that are overturned in science. Yet, science
needs IDEAS and IMAGINATION to view anything out of a
hunk of dirt.
