Ant, Marsha and all MOQers:

Marsha said:
...I don't believe we need another hero, or a journey for that matter.
Because:

Yes, I know from where I came
Ever hungry like a flame,
I consume myself and glow.

Light grows all that I conceive,
Ashes everything I leave:
Flame I am assuredly.

(Homo Ecco, Nietzsche)

Anthony asked Marsha:
Isn't this type of poem usually written by someone after they have travelled
the journey of personal development that Dave was discussing?

dmb says:
Not sure I understand the point, Marsha. How is it that these lines from
Nietzsche work as a reason for your denial? As Ant seems to be saying here,
don't these lines describe the perspective of a person who has stopped
worshipping heros and become one instead? This is definately one of the
points I was trying to make, that political and religious leaders usurp our
engeries and powers to ill effect. I don't think we need another hero
either. I think we need to be heros. I'm thinking this is not entirely
unrelated to the idea of a Superman in Nietzsche's work. You know, in your
own heart and head and hands, etc.. I was trying to say that the messiah
outside yourself is a false one, that the hero is NOT to be worshiped, but
lived. So anyway, I think we actually agree about that, but you tell me.

But saying we don't need another journey? The journey I'm talking about here
is your life. As I understand it, journeys are like opinions. Everybody has
one. If you're still breathing, you're on a journey. The main issue then
becomes the quality of that journey. Are you drifting along, following
whoever's in front of you, stuck in the doldrums, driving that boat into the
rocks? Cause the real motorcycle you're working on is yourself, etc..

Happy trails to you,
until we meet again.
Happy trails to you.

dmb

P.S. I had no idea that Nietzsche was a flamer or that he came out of the
clothset so boldly. His courage is impressive. I suppose it also explains
why he spent so much time with his sister.
