Ant,

I have been troubled, the last few days, by your question regarding
'reading philosophy'. I have read the writings of many
philosophers. Many of these difficult books I have read on my
own. My answer to your suggestion would be: NO. The most important
statement I have ever read by a philosopher were Socrates words,
'Know thyself!'. But they were really the words from the Pythia of
Delphi, weren't they? Now if that is what you meant by
'contemplation'', my answer would agree.

What I do think helpful for civilization would be to replace
religious training with training in critical thinking.
